1983 Beneteau First 38 Sloop

"Further" is hull number 103 and was designed by Bruce Farr and built in Le Reims France.  The First 38s were built with serious ocean sailing in mind and are some of the strongest boats ever built by Beneteau.  They were built to meet the French Governments rigorous Class 1 Certification for Unlimited Offshore Use.  The numerous large floor stringers, full frames, and longitudinal stringers, combined with fully glassed bulkheads and a bulletproof hull-deck joint, make for a stiff hull that can take a beating.  The tall and well suported keel stepped mast and deep fin keel make for a very fast cruiser with a PHRF Rating of 102.  Despite the modern race inspired design the First 38 is seakindly and has a good capsize ratio.  The interior is spacious with two full aft cabins, a large V-berth, and pleanty of storage space.  The interior furniture is mostly constructed of marine ply with teak veneer trimmed with solid rosewood.  The cabin sole is marine ply with teak and holly veneer.  The cabinitry is well designed and solidly built.  The performance and popularity of the original First series In many ways made Beneteau the company it is today.  In 2004 US Sailing Published "10 Used Boats to Sail Around the World" and the First 38 was one of the boats featured.  Indeed many have made circumnavigations.  3 survived in the tradgic Fastnet Race disaster.  The Movie "Visitors," about a solo circumnavigation, features Further's sister ship.
